LUTKA - The Puppet Magazine 2019

In September 2019, new issue of the professional magazine of puppetry art and the theater of animated forms Puppet was published. Magazine presents the diverse practices of interdisciplinary and hybrid forms of contemporary puppetry and analyses the accompanying contemporary problem currents. It offers the fundamental questions we face when considering the current streams of puppet art: how we can redefine and treat the puppet; how far the influence of new media can broaden its definition and effect development of new puppet terminology; how modern practices establish new relationship with animators, material, movement, object, voice ... And, after all, does the puppet or animated object empowered with new technology really need an animator at all…

The magazine offers new connotations and insights with an emphasis on expanding the perception of puppetry in conjunction with new technologies. It reflects that it has not stalled in its traditional basis, but demonstrates that it strongly reflects the present time and through its aesthetic and substantive expression adapts and simultaneously represents the contemporary social structure. With its inherent breadth, with the potential for boundless emergence from scratch, it can transform into a topical, open, exploratory art form.

The magazine was edited by Ajda Rooss, Tjaša Bertoncelj, Maša Jazbec and designed by Ajda Schmidt. The designer received the award for excellent Slovenian design at the 9th Brumen Biennale for the magazine.

The Puppet Magazine was founded in 1966 by the Association of Cultural Organizations (today the Public Fund for Cultural Activities).
The magazin is part of the N.A.P.P. project, supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

Joint issue of The Journal for Puppetry Arts and Theatre of Animated Forms – Lutka and Maska – The Performing Arts Journal

The current issue of the journal is both The Journal for Puppetry Arts and Theatre of Animated Forms – Lutka and Maska – The Performing Arts Journal, and it is dedicated exclusively to animation in contemporary theatre, both in the its broad range of authorial writings and writings about animation. It is the result of the first comprehensive collaboration between two longstanding Slovenian theatre journals (Maska was founded in 1920, and Lutka in 1966).

Initially, at the time of its conception and editing, this issue was rather immodestly called a “collection”, and this description probably comes closest to the result. The special joint edition of Maska and Lutka is largely a result of the 12th iteration of the educational programme The Seminar of Contemporary Performing Arts, which took place during the 2014/2015 academic year and which was conceived and carried out in a collaboration between Maska Institute and Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, and it was dedicated to the art of animated forms in the context of contemporary art.
