Award for Crime and Punishment

30. 10. 2017

The Association of Theatre Critics and Researchers of Slovenia conferred the award for the best performance of the previous season (2016/2017) on Crime and Punishment, an adaptation of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky’s eponymous novel directed by Mirjana Medojević and produced by the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television and the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre. The award was conferred at the closing ceremony of the Maribor Theatre Festival.

Every year, the members of the Association of Theatre Critics and Researchers of Slovenia vote for the best performance of the previous season. Eligible are all performances that premiered in the Slovenian cultural space, that is, in Slovenia or the regions in the neighbouring countries populated by the Slovenian minority, between 1 June 2016 and 31 May 2017.

The Association justified its decision as follows: “Crime and Punishment enters the relation with the extensiveness of the novel, which in addition also bears the weight of history, through the key dimensions of the performance, its space and its temporality. Set at the fork in the Tunnel, it finds in the dark, damp paths of this place a flashy spatialisation. Its duration opens extensive and detailed images of the wretched, the humiliated and the insulted. Three actors skilfully switch between different characters, their individual voices are revealed in their joint acting, in dialogue. With its precise and poetic theatre language, the performance unfolds Dostoyevsky’s spiritual cosmos, while constantly checking the relations in the cross-section of common time, including the relations with the spectators.”
