The poetic text of the great writer for children and young people Roald Dahl, Revolting Rhymes, is actually deprived of any classical dramatic structure. In his funny verse, bravourously re-created by Milan Dekleva, he recapitulates once again some stories from the treasure trove of the most known fairy tales. Thus we learn once again, only in a somewhat different manner, what happened to the Little Red Riding Hood, what is the truth about the Snow White, who are the heroes from The Three Little Pigs and more, and more… These freshly retold fairy tales, known by heart by the children of all generations, are mostly such as they should be, but …
They are actually Dahl’s most interesting, playful and funny additions to classic fairy tales. The Little Red Riding Hood, who carries the basket to her grandmother, really runs into the wolf, but… But the Little Red Riding Hood is not to be sneezed at either, as she stands up to defend herself in a quite imaginative and surprising manner. Therefore the message conveyed by the fairy tale is slightly different as well. Is it more interesting? Is it more dynamic? Maybe even more modern? One way or another, it is wittier and funnier. Dahl is not tiring us with happy endings, but rather chooses to amaze us time and again with his elusive imagination. The performance surprises its viewers with funny scenic solutions thus presenting the well-known fairy tales in a new, still unknown guise that is endlessly amusing and dynamic. And it certainly makes us think as well!
