The Smartest Giant in Town
To take off on the stage of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre after The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child that overcame their fear in the forest full of predators and various adventures of the anything but evil Witch in the Room on the Broom, is the new hit by the internationally renowned Scottish writer Julia Donaldson, The Smartest Giant in Town. Directed by Jaka Ivanc to the music by Davor Herceg, it playfully depicts the benefits of mutual help and unselfishness.
The most tattered giant in town is looking for a makeover, so he gets himself some new clothes. In his new socks, shoes, tie, shirt and trousers he really looks like the smartest giant in town. But, alas, on his way home he meets different animals, which were struck by various misfortunes: a giraffe sniffles sadly, a goat's oars got washed away, little mice have lost their little house, a fox has been deprived of its sleeping bag. All the wretched animals urgently need his help … and his new clothes. He is thus getting colder and colder, until he gets back to the beginning – to his old clothes. Perhaps he is just the most comfortable giant in town. But doing good, always brings back good, so a real surprise awaits him at home. What really counts is finally revealed: Jure is actually the kindest giant in town.

The production, based on a story of satisfaction with what we have and willingness to give to those who do not, is changing and turning into a dynamic play of perspectives. The intertwining of distance and proximity, large and small and of varied dimensions not only stirs the viewers' imagination, but also opens their view. It also plays with various puppetry techniques, agitating the entire stage with songs, visual design and source text.

Jaka Ivanc is a theatre and puppet director, whose productions are characterised by his excellent fusion of drama and puppet theatre with music – in its many forms. He has created a number of successful performances in our theatre, including The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Son and Room on the Groom.
