Andrew Sleepless
Andrew Sleepless is a picturesque story about children's imagination that triggers fears in children as well as depicts monsters in their wardrobes. The performance is based on the motifs of the homonymous picture book, markedly different due to its story, partly unveiled solely through its illustrations. Quite similarly the nonverbal dance and puppet performance uses for its narration nonverbal theatrical means, such as: movement, object animation and music, thus leaving more space for imagination. Transforming the selected literary motifs and focusing itself on Andrew's fear of sleep and his vivid dreams - from nightmares, in which he is visited by two monsters to his dreams about the sea, waves and a whale, who scares the monsters away, and whom he bravely confronts to defeat his fear.
  • The picture book Andrew Sleepless (Mladinska knjiga, 2014) by the poet and writer Barbara Simoniti and painter and illustrator Peter Škerl tells about a boy with vivid imagination, who has trouble falling asleep. When his mummy reads to him his favourite book about the blue whale, he is visited by a bat, known for its weaving of dreamy stories. Here the verbal narration ends and Andrew's travel to the world of dreams is depicted only by the illustrations.

  • The performance was directed by Dutch choreographer and pedagogue Jack Timmermans, who mostly creates shows for children and young people. The word choreography stems from two expressions, meaning »to write dance«. A choreographer’s job is to design movements, by means of which he or she can express or support his or her thoughts, feelings or ideas.
