Following Hamlet (2006), Romeo & Juliet (2011), The Merchant of Venice (2015) and The Tempest (2016), this production is likewise a rendition of one of William Shakespeare’s most important texts in world drama that we are adding to our repertoire as a puppet production. Macbeth is aimed at audiences aged 15 and over.

Macbeth is Shakespeare's most bloodthirsty work that is preoccupied with the isolation associated with power, with the fear of its collapse, but also with its ineffectiveness; as authority based on power cannot really create anything that lasts. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, the protagonists of this tragedy, draw maps of massacres, painted like echoes from the past right into the geopolitical tensions of today.

This senseless struggle for power, which, as director Matteo Spiazzi writes, is "barren and incapable of producing anything, such as the alliance between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth", comes to life on stage in the form of a battle between metal objects, which have been associated with power throughout history; often they even represented its symbol and means of conquest. The landscapes of these objects are conjured up by mythological witches that, like the Fates, accompany the slow rusting away of the protagonists and weave a powerful image of the collapse of any given family, society, civilisation.

The production features the waltzes Morgenblätter and Rosas do Sul by Johann Strauss II, Valse triste by Jean Sibelius and an excerpt of music by Scott Gibbons from the film The Last Time I Saw My Father by Chiara Guidi.

Matteo Spiazzi is a graduate of the Italian Civic Accademy of Dramatic Arts "Nico Pepe". He works as a director and theatre educator in Italy and many other countries such as Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Poland, Ukraine and Russia. He specialises in working with masks, especially in theatre. He has worked as a workshop tutor with major institutions around the world, including the University of Verona, the University of Tartu, the National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Minsk, the Kyiv University of Culture and the Czech DAMU. For his production Pinocchio (Maribor Puppet Theatre, 2019) he received the award for best director at the 11th Biennial of Puppetry Artists of Slovenia.
