A production somewhere between political theatre, object theatre, grotesque operetta, concert and Dadaist cabaret, U!BU? reimagines the legendary anti-hero Alfred Jarry, King Ubu, for the contemporary world. In this anarchic theatrical-musical composition directed by Matija Solce, the absurd becomes a weapon against power, greed, manipulation and social hypocrisy.
Five performers – musicians, actors, animators and provocateurs – create a chaotic universe using toilet brushes, puppets, instruments, bodies, noise and outrageous humour. Language constantly dissolves into barking, music, grotesque sounds and exaggerated physical action, thereby transforming speech itself into meaning and destruction. The performance openly provokes the audience, attacking political systems, social symbols, ideologies and collective fears with irreverent humour and relentless energy. Yet beneath the absurdity lies a sharp critique of contemporary society and its endless parade of self-proclaimed ‘kings’.
U!BU? is an eccentric, confrontational cabaret that celebrates theatrical excess, collective madness and the dangerous pleasure of laughter as a form of power.
